Graded EX+ 5.5 by PSA. This extremely rare E98 "Set of 30" candy card features Hall of Famer Frank Chance, one of the key cards from this highly elusive issue. The manufacturer of E98 is unknown. This rare caramel issue from 1910 may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E94 specifically); this is an entirely different set even though it uses many of the same subjects and poses. This is a very strong card, perfectly clean both front and back, with light corner wear (a bit more to the upper left), a slight diamond cut, and a brilliant image set against a flawless bright green background. (It is interesting to note that all of the Frank Chance cards in the famous "Black Swamp Find" of E98s were red background varieties.) The back features the checklist for the set in crisp, bold brown print. This card has outstanding eye appeal! Caramel cards in general are much rarer than tobacco cards of the era. Because they were issued with caramels one card per package and sold to children (as opposed to being sold to adults with tobacco), they also tend to survive in a much lower grade. This is an exceptionally strong E98 example of Hall of Famer Frank Chance from this rare, early twentieth-century candy issue. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
