Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Extremely rare Dennis Sullivan, Boston team variation, from this scarce candy issue. The 30-card E97 set was issued in 1909-1910 by the C. A. Briggs Co., Lozenge Makers of Boston, Mass. Sullivan is a very interesting subject in the E97 set. It is not clear if this card is Dennis Sullivan or Billy Sullivan. This card is known to exist in two variations: with the team identified as Chicago and also as Boston. Billy Sullivan played for Chicago, but not Boston. Dennis Sullivan never played with Chicago, and played for Boston briefly in 1907, years before the E97 set was issued. The confusion of who this card was intended to represent is no doubt related to the fact that it was issued with two different team identifications. Because the card pictures Sullivan in a Boston uniform, our best guess is that the player pictured is actually Dennis Sullivan, and was intended to be Chicago's Billy Sullivan, and the error was addressed by changing the team identification. This is the "Sullivan, Boston Amer." variety. It is extremely rare. This example is bright and crisp, with bold colors, and even wear on the corners. The checklist back is boldly printed and perfectly clean. Downgraded from Vg-Ex due to several creases. This is a very attractive, fascinating, and rarely offered example of the Sullivan, Boston variation, from the very scarce E97 Briggs Co. set. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
