Extremely desirable example of Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Famer Honus Wagner from the E94 George Close Candy set, one of the most desirable and highly collected of all 1910-era caramel-card sets. The E94 Wagner is considered by many to be among Wagner's most classic cards. Graded VG 40 by SGC, the card is very presentable with minor technical flaws, including a very faint crease across the lower portion of the card and natural rounding to the corners, responsible for the modest assigned grade. The image of Wagner is set against a bold red background and is centered slightly to the left. The reverse features a checklist for the set and is clean with only one small spot of staining present. While at a glance E94s may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely different set, even though they use many of the same subjects and poses. Of the three previously mentioned sets, E94s are the most difficult to find. The E94 caramel-card set is usually associated with the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Massachusetts. While most of the E94 cards do not have any sort of advertisement on the back, some have been found with overprints that refer to this company. Caramel cards, of course, are rarely found in high grade. A presentable and relatively affordable example of the legendary Honus Wagner from this rare, early twentieth-century candy issue, and one that would be an outstanding addition to any “E” card, Hall of Famer, Honus Wagner, or classic prewar-card collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500++.
