Bowman's "Firefighters" set is one of the most popular and elusive of all 1950s nonsport gum-card issues. Presented is a mid- to high-grade complete set of all 64 cards. Eleven cards grade Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt, forty-seven cards grade Vg-Ex to Ex, and six cards grade slightly lesser. Two cards have been graded and encapsulated EX-MT 6 by PSA: #18 Modern Searchlight Wagon and 26 Fire Patrol. All cards are bright and crisp with centering the most noticeable flaw on many, which is very common for this issue. The set features incredible multicolor artwork illustrations of fire engines, fireboats, and rescue trucks. The back of each card in the set has a fire-prevention tip (e.g., "Don't Play with Matches") printed above the equipment descriptions, which qualifies the set as the first "safety" trading-card set ever produced. The set is accompanied by a wrapper with slightly more than normal packaging wrinkles and folds but which is still in overall Excellent condition. This is a very sharp-looking complete set of this very scarce issue. Total: 64 cards plus wrapper. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
