Rare collection of Honest Long Cut "Buffalo Bill Wild West Show" die-cut figures, display platform, and original mailing envelope issued by the American Tobacco Company in the early 1890s. Designated "N143" in the American Card Catalog
. This set, which was issued both as a complete mail-in premium and as inserts in packages of the company's Honest Long Cut tobacco brands, was designed so that patrons could recreate Buffalo Bill's famous "Wild West Show" at home. The offered collection features thirty-one of the thirty-eight issued die-cut figures, the cardboard platform upon which the figures are meant to stand (by means of tabs inserted in the precut slots) and the original mailing envelope. (Missing the six act tabs and program). The offered collection was obtained by mail, as evidenced by the accompanying original mailing envelope. Even if the mailing envelope were not present, this set can be identified as the mail-in premium because the figures inserted in tobacco packages all displayed Honest Long Cut brand advertising on the reverse; the mail in figures are blank backed. (The display platform could also be obtained as an over-the-counter giveaway from participating vendors.) All of the thirty-one die-cut figures are complete with their mounting tabs (the tabs display either a number or letter) with the exception of one (Indian holding a shield). Condition of the figures ranges from Vg (moderate creasing) to Ex-Mt, averaging Vg-Ex. The display platform (9.5 x 9.5 inches) remains in Good to Very Good condition, with creases and minor edge tears. The original mailer (10 x 10 inches) is in Fair condition, with toning, foxing, staining, and numerous tears and creases. Total: 33 items (31 die-cut figures, display platform, and mailing envelope). Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
