Outstanding partial set of thirty-six different (out of fifty) 1889 N165 Goodwin & Co. "Games and Sport Series" cards, entirely graded by SGC. Issued by Goodwin & Company, one card was inserted with each package of Old Judge cigarettes. One of the few pre-1900 full-color sports-related tobacco sets, this set features generic ballplayer scenes with portraits of women ballplayers in the foreground and is all the more distinctive in that the illustrations are not comical. The cards each measure approximately 1-1/2 x 2-3/4 inches and a checklist for the entire set appears on the reverse. In the following condition composite, cards are identified by the numbers provided by the American Tobacco Cards Price Guide checklist. SGC Grading Composite: One NM 84: #44. One EX 60: #45. One VG/EX+ 55: #38. Six VG/EX 50: #3 baseball batter, 4 baseball catcher, 6 baseball pitcher, 13, 15, and 24. Three VG+ 45: #10 boxing, 32, and 47. Seven VG 40: #8, 9, 12, 20, 27, 41, and 50. Two GOOD+ 35: #36 and 42. Two GOOD 30: #7 and 40. Nine FAIR 20: #2, 5 baseball fielder, 16, 19, 23, 26, 28, 31, and 43. Four POOR 10: #1, 11, 14, and 22 football. Missing #17, 18, 21, 25, 29, 30, 33-35, 37, 39, 46, 48, and 49 for completion. This is a very attractive near-complete set of this popular nineteenth-century issue. Total: 36 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
