Rare signature example of rock legend Janis Joplin (1943-1970) on the back cover of a Thomas Jefferson Class of 1960 Directory. Joplin has inscribed the directory, "Love Janis Joplin," in black marker, with the signature grading "9." In addition to her signature, Joplin has also drawn a heart below her name. Joplin graduated Thomas Jefferson High School, located in Port Arthur, Texas, in 1960 and her name appears in the directory, with her address listed as "c/o Mr. Albert Grossman, ABGN, 75 East 55 Street, New York 10011." Joplin died tragically in 1970, at the age of 27, following a heroin overdose. This is the first Janis Joplin signature example we have ever handled and, outside of a small number of handwritten letters, one of only a few Joplin signed items we have seen. The twenty-nine page soft-cover booklet (8.5 x 11 inches) displays a few light stains on both the front and back cover. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Full LOA from Steve Grad and Brian Sobrero/Beckett Authentication. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
