Exceedingly rare poster, titled "Muhammad Ali," produced for the heavyweight title bout between champion George Frazier and Muhammad Ali, famously known as "The Rumble in the Jungle," held on October 30, 1974, in Kinshasa, Zaire. The artist's name and date, "David Mosley '74," are printed to the right of Ali's image. The printing along the lower left border reads "Distributed by Afrikana Co. Los Angeles, California - Abidjan, Ivory Coast 1974." This is the first example of this poster we have ever seen and it comes with the provenance of having been consigned directly by a gentleman who was living in Zaire at the time of the fight. (This is the same gentleman who has consigned nearly all of the exceedingly rare Ali/Foreman onsite fight posters we have sold over the past few years.) According to our consignor, this poster was also seen displayed on streets and other venues during the time of the bout. We should note that we have seen one other onsite poster created by David Mosley for this fight, which was titled "From Slaveship to Championship," However, when Zaire President Mobutu Sese Seko saw that poster, which pictured Africans in chains and slave ships, he demanded that all copies be destroyed. Perhaps the offered poster was Mosley's replacement for his first offering. Onsite posters for fights, even those which occur in the United States, tend to be scarce in general, because of their very limited print runs and very local intended use. When a fight is in a distant foreign country such as Zaire, as was the case with "The Rumble in the Jungle," the survival of onsite posters is extremely rare. As stated earlier, we have never seen or heard of another example of this poster and have no information regarding its method of distribution or its print run. The poster (22.5 x 28.5 inches) displays a number of moderate border flaws, including numerous tack holes and small tears (all of which can be easily matted out), but the central image area is free of any significant defects and presents as Ex-MT. Please note: this poster has been stored tightly rolled for decades and will ship rolled in a tube. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
