Collection of nine original large-format photographs (13.25 x 8.75 inches) taken by noted photographer Lynn Pelham for Sports Illustrated
in 1964. Six of the photos capture Cassius Clay (soon to be known as Muhammad Ali) as he prepares for his first fight against heavyweight champion Sonny Liston, while the remaining three picture Liston in training for their rematch, which ultimately took place on May 25, 1965. All of the Clay photos feature Pelham's name stamped on the reverse as well as the date "3-12-64." The date on the reverse appears to denote when the photos were scheduled to be published, as research indicates that all of these photos were taken on February 9, 1964, while Clay was in training for his first bout against Sonny Liston on February 25, 1964. Two of the Clay photos picture him in the ring (one by himself, the other with his handlers working on his gloves), while the other four capture him lying on the training table while being attended to by Bundini Brown. What is especially appealing about the photos of Clay lying on the table is that artist LeRoy Neiman is clearly visible in the background busily sketching the scene before him. Trainer Angelo Dundee is also pictured in the background. The remaining three photos capture Sonny Liston in training for the historic rematch. Two picture him sparring in the ring and the other pictures him hitting the heavy bag. All feature a Sports Illustrated
/Lynn Pelham credit stamp on the reverse, which is dated "10/31/64." Each of the photos is slightly curled and displays moderate handling wear. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Total: 9 photos. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
