Outstanding ultra-high-grade collection of 179 cards (147 different) from the 1971-1972 Topps Basketball series, highlighted by twenty-one Hall of Famers including Jerry West, Lew Alcindor, and Bill Bradley, and representing more than half a complete set. The 1971-1972 Topps set is very popular among collectors for its bright colors and funky text, both telltale signs of an early 1970s issue. This was also the first year that Topps included cards of ABA (American Basketball Association) players. Condition is 56% Nr/Mt-Mt (including some Mint), 36% Nr/Mt, and 8% Ex to Ex-Mt (including five with a slight trim). Twenty-one cards have been graded and encapsulated by PSA. Keys:
#2 Bradley (HOF, NM 7), 20 Haywood RC (HOF, NM-MT 8), 30 Reed (HOF, Nr/Mt+), 50 West (HOF, wax on back, otherwise Nr/Mt), 58 Murphy (HOF, Nr/Mt+), 63 Lanier RC (70/30 T/B, otherwise Nr/Mt-Mt), 65 Frazier (HOF, NM-MT 8), 66 Walker (HOF, NM-MT 8), 69 White (HOF, MINT 9), 78 Bing (HOF, Nr/Mt), 81 Lucas (HOF, NM-MT 8), 100 Alcindor (HOF, NM-MT 8), 105 Hawkins (HOF, Nr/Mt), 107 DeBusschere (HOF, Ex-Mt), 114 Nelson (HOF, Nr/Mt), 116 Bellamy (HOF, Nr/Mt+), 121 Goodrich (HOF, Nr/Mt+), 131 Thurmond (HOF, NM-MT 8), 195 Daniels (HOF, NM-MT 8), two 224 Dampier RC (HOF, both NM-MT 8), and 225 Brown RC (HOF, NM-MT 8). Additional PSA graded cards: MINT 9 (7 cards):
#112, 167, 176, 187, 202, 217, and 223. NM-MT+ 8.5 (1 card):
#210. NM 7 (1 card):
#40. Extremely attractive ultra-high-grade collection of this popular 1970s Topps basketball issue, loaded with stars and Hall of Famers, and representing a substantial start towards a complete set. The total SMR value for just the twenty-one graded cards (factoring in the half-grade at the lower whole-grade level and not including the 158 ungraded cards!) is $717. Total: 179 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
