Derek Jeter Louisville Slugger signature-model "P72" bat dating from the 1999 season. Graded GU 10 by PSA/DNA. This bat has extraordinary provenance and first came to auction as Lot 958 in REA's October 2014 auction. Our original consignor, who lived in Florida, had a professional relationship with Derek Jeter and, as he relates in his accompanying letter of provenance, Jeter personally gave him this bat during spring training in 1999. Jeter told him at the time that this bat was one that he used often and then signed it for our consignor in silver paint pen (grading "10") on the back of the barrel. It had been in the original consignor's collection until he finally decided to part with it in 2014 (the year in which Jeter retired). The bat, which is not cracked, displays extraordinary use along its entire length. A plethora of ball marks, stitch marks, and deep, blue ink transfers are visible along the barrel, as is a concentrated area of grain swelling on one side. A moderate amount of pine tar remains on the handle. A few slight chips to the black finish are evident on the barrel as well. Derek Jeter is the greatest shortstop in New York Yankees history and one of the few players to be honored with the title of "Captain." Since Jeter's debut in 1995, the Yankees have won seven pennants and five World Championships, not to mention fourteen out of eighteen Division titles. Like Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, and Mantle before him, Jeter personifies the current Yankees dynasty and it seems assured that one day his plaque will hang both in Yankee Stadium's Monument Park and Cooperstown. Length: 34 inches. Weight: 31.8 ounces. LOA from John Taube of PSA/DNA and full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Pre certified by Steve Grad and Brian Sobrero/Beckett Authentication. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $3,000+.
