Willie McCovey H&B block-letter (last name only) model "K44" bat dating from the 1962-1963 manufacturing period. Graded GU 9.5 by PSA/DNA. This is an extremely early McCovey bat and one of the few we have seen dating from the early 1960s. The bat displays evidence of heavy use along its entire length, including numerous ball marks and stitch impressions on all sides of the barrel, cleat marks, green bat-rack marks, a light application of pine tar on the lower handle, and a crack in the handle that has been professionally repaired. McCovey's uniform number ("44") is written in faded black marker on the knob, as is the bat's original weight ("33 1/2"), which is recorded in pencil. McCovey began his Major League career in 1959 with the Giants and even though he only appeared in fifty-two games in that year, his 13 home runs, 38 RBI, and .354 average earned him the Rookie of the Year Award. Over the course of the next twenty-one seasons McCovey was one of the game's greatest sluggers and his lifetime total of 521 home runs ties him for twentieth on the all-time list with Ted Williams and Frank Thomas. Included among his many individual achievements are three home-run titles (1963, 1968, and 1969) and one MVP Award (1969). He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1986. This is an extraordinary high-grade McCovey bat dating from the earliest days of his Major League career. Length: 34.5 ounces. Weight: 33 ounces. LOA from John Taube of PSA/DNA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $3,000+.
