Eddie Mathews H&B signature-model ("S2") bat dating from the 1961-1963 manufacturing period. Graded GU 9 by PSA/DNA. As noted by PSA/DNA in its accompanying letter, the bat displays evidence of excellent use along its entire length, including a number of ball marks (with black-ink transfers) and stitch marks on all sides of the barrel and a crack in the handle that has been professionally repaired. Mathews' uniform number ("41") is written on the knob in black marker. Signed by Mathews in blue Sharpie (grading "8/9') on the "sweet spot" of the barrel. The amount of use on this bat is not surprising, given that all three seasons between the years 1961 and 1963 were productive ones for the slugging third baseman. Mathews registered home-run and RBI totals of 32/91, 29/90, and 23/84, respectively, those three seasons. He also led the National League in walks each season during that span, and in on base percentage (.400) in 1963. A member of baseball's elite 500 Home Run Club, Mathews retired after the 1968 season with 512 home runs, 1,453 RBI, and a .271 lifetime average. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1978. LOA from John Taube of PSA/DNA and auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Pre certified by Steve Grad and Brian Sobrero/Beckett Authentication. Opening Bid $2,500. Estimate $5,000+.
