Baltimore Orioles home flannel jersey worn by Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson in 1962. Graded A8 by MEARS. This is an extremely early Brooks Robinson game jersey and we can only recall having seen two others that predate it. The zipper-front white flannel jersey is lettered "Orioles" across the front and features the number "5" on the left breast and reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in orange on black felt. An Orioles team patch adorns the left sleeve. Both the uniform number and year ("5-1962") are chain-stitched in black upon a white strip tag located in the collar. A "Wilson 42" tag appears on the left front tail. Robinson has signed the jersey in black Sharpie (grading "6") in the collar. Both the reverse number and sleeve patch are partially detached along the seams, but each is still firmly anchored to the jersey. The jersey is completely original, with no alterations, and displays heavy wear, including a moderate stain on the left breast, as well as additional light, scattered staining on the front. Robinson is generally considered to be the greatest fielding third baseman in history. Although known for his glove work, he also enjoyed many fine seasons at the plate. 1962 was one of his finest seasons. Robinson batted .303 with 23 home runs and 86 RBI in 1962. He also won his third (out of an eventual record sixteen) consecutive Gold Glove Awards at season's end. Graded A8 by MEARS (10 point base grade, with 1 point deducted for the number/patch seam separation, and 1 point deducted for the stain on the front). LOA from Troy Kinunnen/MEARS and auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Pre certified by Steve Grad and Brian Sobrero/Beckett Authentication. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $15,000+.
