Joe Jackson H&B block-letter (last name only) bat dating from the circa 1933 manufacturing period. (The narrow dating was determined by the combined styles of the center brand and "Powerized" stampings; the "Powerized" stamping is very light, but can be seen with the naked eye upon very close examination.) Graded GU 7 by PSA/DNA. It is well known that after Joe Jackson was officially banned from organized baseball following the 1920 season, he continued to play ball with local town or company teams (often using an alias) in order to eke out a living. His post-banishment career lasted well into the 1930s, when he often played and managed. This particular bat appears to have been used by Jackson during the latter portion of that time span, when he was in his mid forties. As PSA/DNA notes in its accompanying LOA, although the bat bears no model number, it can be easily identified as his "J13" model, which is distinguished by its large handle. PSA/DNA also makes clear in its letter that "the authentication of Joe Jackson post career bats is not an easy task." However, as the company further explains, this example meets all of the criteria needed for it to conclude that "the bat is authentic and was used by Jackson during the referenced labeling period." (We encourage all bidders to read PSA/DNA's informative four-page LOA, which can be viewed, in its entirety, on our website, so that they may have a full understanding of the company's analysis and conclusion.) As most collectors are aware, Joe Jackson game-used bats dating from his Major League career are not only exceedingly rare, but exorbitant in price. A bat such as this is the next best alternative (usually the only alternative for the average collector) to obtain a bat once used by the legendary "Shoeless Joe," albeit during his banishment days, when he would barnstorm around the country trying to earn a paycheck playing the game he loved so dearly. Length: 35 inches. Weight: 33.1 ounces. LOA from John Taube of PSA/DNA. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open).
