Small, gold-colored metal baseball charm featuring the team name "Monarchs" and the year "1927" engraved on the front. The charm, which is designed to resemble an actual baseball, was produced by the well-known sporting goods firm of Wright & Ditson, as noted on the underside. While there was probably more than one baseball team named the "Monarchs" in 1927, the only one that we know of is, of course, the fabled Kansas City Monarchs. If this charm were produced for a member of the Kansas City Monarchs in 1927, it represents both an extremely early and significant piece of Negro League memorabilia. This is the first "Monarchs" charm, from any year, we have ever seen, making it a rare piece regardless of its specific team designation. The charm (approximately 2 inches in circumference) is complete with its metal clasp at the top displays normal handling wear commensurate with its age. In Excellent condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
