Original news photo of Babe Ruth as a member of the New York Yankees, circa 1921. Accompanied by an LOA from PSA/DNA certifying it as an original Type 1 news-service photo. Ruth is pictured in his road uniform as he strikes a batting pose at an unidentified field. A number of young boys can be seen in the background, one of whom is holding a bat. A "Keystone View Co. Inc. of N. Y." credit stamp appears on the reverse. The attached paper news caption reads "BABE RUTH - MAKES 55TH HOME RUN AND BREAKS ALL RECORDS - to the hysterical delight of 28,000 fans at New York Polo Grounds." Ruth's 55th home run in 1921, which broke his previous year's single-season record of 54, occurred during the first game of a double header against the St. Louis Browns on September 15th at the Polo Grounds. While this photo obviously does not originate from that very game, it remains an extremely early image of Ruth as a New York Yankee (he joined the club in 1920), not to mention one of the finer such examples we have seen. Like all working press photos from the era, the photo (6.5 x 8.5 inches) displays a number of minor flaws, including a few small edge tears, tiny creases, and light edge wear. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. This is an outstanding original photo of Ruth chronicling the start of his rise from ballplayer to cultural icon. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
