Exceedingly rare advertising display issued in promotion of Christy Mathewson's newest book, Won In The Ninth
, which was published in 1910. The colorful cardboard sign features a full-figure photo of Mathewson in uniform, with the text reading in part: "The 'Fan Book' A Baseball Story - A live story with live characters written by the man who knows more than any other about the men who are playing the game today - Buy It For Your Boy - But Read It Yourself." Won in the Ninth
was one in a series of fictional baseball books published under Mathewson's name, all of which were ghostwritten. One of the most humorous aspects of this piece is the listing of the lineups for the two teams in Matty's new book, both of which feature players with very similar names to the top major league stars of the day: "Robb-RF" (Cobb), "Hagner-SS" (Wagner), "Everson-2B" (Evers), "La Joy-2B" (Lajoie), "Case-1B" (Chase), and "Warcford-LF" (Crawford). The rarity of this piece cannot be overstated. This is one of one of only two examples we have ever seen and the first we have ever offered. It is also one of the few premier Christy Mathewson advertising pieces issued during his illustrious career. The advertising sign (12 x 15 inches; visible dimensions) displays just light surface wear and what appears to be a few minor repairs to tears along the border areas, none of which detract in the least from its Near Mint overall appearance. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 16.5 x 19.5 inches. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open).
