Exceedingly rare photographic poster supplement to the 1888 Sporting Times capturing ten members of the New York Giants posing together in a formal studio setting. All of the members are in uniform with the exception of manager Jim Mutrie. The players pictured here, all of whom are identified in print along the base (last name only), are Elmer Cleveland, Pat Murphy, Gil Hatfield, Mike Slattery, Cannonball Titcomb, George Gore, Mike Tiernan, Ed Crane, and Elmer Foster. "Copyrighted by N. Y. Sporting Times Pub. Co.," is printed in the lower-left corner of the photo. The text above the photo reads "Supplement to the Sporting Times, Vol. II., No. 5.," while the caption below identifies the group as "The New York Ball Club's New Players." (All of the players pictured joined the Giants in either 1887 or 1888.) In 2007, seven different Sporting Times baseball photo supplements from this series surfaced. Prior to their discovery, all were previously unknown, and are thus unique. While we can not state positively, we believe the offered supplement was one of the seven discovered in 2007, as we have never seen another example. Both Slattery and Tiernan, pictured here, were key contributors to the Giants in 1888 and helped lead the club to its first of two consecutive World Championships, making this both an incredibly rare and historically significant piece. The supplement (18 x 14 inches), which is printed on thin paper stock, displays a heavy vertical and horizontal fold (probably as issued), as well as numerous light creases and small edge tears. Minor separations can be found along the fold lines. In Good condition overall, but the central image area is free of any significant flaws. Because of their large size and thin stock, it is not surprising that supplements from this impressive series have not survived, with the exception of the one aforementioned find. We are pretty confident that we won't ever see another example of this fascinating rarity, which remains perfect for display, as intended.
