CDV capturing the nine members of the Antioch College baseball team in 1869. The formal studio photograph pictures the players posing in uniform, with a large "A" prominently displayed on their bib-front jerseys. Three of the players are holding bats, while the figure seated in the middle holds a ball. The photographer's credit, "Landy" of Cincinnati, Ohio, appears on the reverse. A partially legible vintage ink inscription on the reverse reads in part "Compliments of A. B. B. C." The only other example of this CDV we have been able to find is housed in the permanent collection of Antioch College (located in Yellow Springs, Ohio). While we do not know the merits of the Antioch College nine, they will forever be remembered as one of the earliest opponents of the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings. The college lads were obviously no match for the all-professional Red Stockings and were easily defeated 41-7, but in that loss they forever etched their name in the annals of baseball history. The CDV (4 x 2.5 inches) displays light contrast and is otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition overall. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
