Six-page fold-over contract, dated March 10, 1983, between Wade Boggs and the Boston Red Sox, signed in blue ink by “Wade A. Boggs” (grading “10”), “Haywood C. Sullivan” (“10”), general manager of the Red Sox, and “L. MacPhail” (“8/9”), in his capacity as American League president. A special two-page addendum (8.5 x 11 inches), which accompanies the contract, specifies the payment terms of the one-year agreement for the 1983 season. According to the addendum, Boggs is to receive an annual salary of $100,000, plus a number of bonuses based upon specific performance requirements. The addendum has been signed in blue ink by both Boggs and Sullivan (each grading “10”), and by a witness. Additionally, both Boggs and Sullivan have initialed each page. 1983 marked Boggs’ second full season in the majors, and he followed up his promising rookie campaign, in which he hit .349, by winning his first of five American League batting titles. Boggs batted .361 with 5 home runs and 74 RBI in 1983. It was also the second of 10 consecutive seasons in which he would hit over .300. Boggs retired in 1999 with a .328 lifetime average, which ranks 33rd all time. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2005.
