Graded FAIR 20 by SGC (submitted by REA). Magnificent high-grade example of star first baseman Hal Chase of the New York Highlanders (later became the Yankees) from the rare and highly regarded PC805 postcard set issued by the Novelty Cutlery Co. of Canton, Ohio, in 1907. Chase was, in fact, a major star of the day, but his involvement with gambling and unsavory characters undermined his legend, and ensured that he would forever remain a "non-Hall of Famer." The PC805 series is universally recognized as one of the most desirable of all baseball postcard issues. These cards have always been appreciated by collectors both for their extreme rarity and distinctive style. The card is very crisp and clean with minimal, even wear to the corners, and a light surface wrinkle in the middle of the bottom border below his name. The reverse has pencil writing. Do not be fooled by the modest grade! This card has an appearance far superior to its technically accurate grade and would easily grade VG-EX if not for the pencil writing on the back. This is a stunning and rare card of one of the era's most legendary stars. Dimensions: 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
