This 1972 New York Yankees team photo is notable both for its immense size, measuring 36.5 x 27.5 inches, and the fact that is has been flawlessly signed in red felt-tip pen by twenty-seven of the thirty team members pictured, including Thurman Munson. This is a unique piece and its rarity is directly related to its provenance: it has been consigned directly by a former batboy with the Yankees in 1972 (he is pictured kneeling in the first row). According to his account, he personally asked the photographer to make this enormous print for him and then had it signed by the players as a keepsake. What makes this piece even more special is that it was then framed for him by Yankees coach Elston Howard. Howard and his wife operated an art gallery in Teaneck, New Jersey, and the gallery's label, "Elston Howard Gallery,"appears on the reverse paper backing. The twenty-seven team members who have signed the piece upon their respective images are Munson, Murcer, Kekich, Peterson, Kline, Stottlemyre, Lyle, McDaniel, Ellis, Blasingame, Michael, Alou, Lanier, Swoboda, Bloomberg,Gardner, Allen, Sanchez, Beene, Howard (coach), Hegan (coach), Houk (Mgr.), Turner (coach), Howser (coach), Clarke, White, and Callison. Although we are not positive in our identifications, it appears that the three players who have not signed the piece are Rich Hinton, Charlie Spikes, and Jerry Kenney. In addition to the players and coaches, the photo has also been signed by longtime clubhouse man Pete Sheehy, a team executive, and four of the five bat boys (including our consignor). All of the signatures are boldly scripted and grade "10." (Our consignor purposely used red ink and had the players sign across the white background of their uniforms so each signature would stand out.) This is an extraordinary New York Yankees team signed piece featuring one of the finest Munson signatures we have ever seen. The photo displays a few extremely minor surface blemishes and a few tiny areas of light wrinkling, none of which detract in the least from its overall Excellent to Mint appearance. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 38.5 x 29.5 inches. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Pre certified by Steve Grad and Brian Sobrero/Beckett Authentication.
