Official American League (Harridge) ball signed in either blue or black ink by the following 27 members of the 1951 World Champion New York Yankees (some more than once): DiMaggio (sweet spot), Mantle, Berra, Rizzuto, Kuzava, Collins, Woodling, Reynolds, Hopp (twice), Sain, Brideweser, Ostrowski, Silvera (twice), Morgan, Brown, Overmire, Schallock, Carey, McDonald (twice), Bauer, Noren, McDougald, Hogue, Lopat, Miller, Cerv, and Houk. The Vic Raschi signature on the sweet spot has been deemed a clubhouse example by JSA and Beckett Authentication.
There are four other signatures on the ball that we do not recognize that may be those of minor league players. Although the signatures of DiMaggio and Mantle together on this ball seem to clearly date it to 1951, there is the possibility that it might have been signed in sprint training of 1952. The reason for that is the presence of the Jim McDonald and Bill Miller signatures. Both McDonald and Miller did not join the Yankees until 1952. If it were signed in spring training of 1952 (perhaps DiMaggio was a visitor or special instructor), it would also help explain the four unidentified signatures (minor leaguers who did not make the club). The signatures range from "4" to "8," averaging "6." The ball is lightly toned and is in Excellent condition. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Pre certified by Steve Grad and Brian Sobrero/Beckett Authentication. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000.
