Official American League (Harridge) ball signed in blue ink by the following 26 members of the 1953 World Champion New York Yankees: Mantle (sweet spot), Berra, Mize, Rizzuto, Ford, Reynolds (sweet spot), Sain, Renna, Woodling, Miller, Carey, Martin, Lopat, Bollweg, McDougald, Houk, Kuzava, Bauer, Blackwell, Raschi, Collins, McDonald, Scarborough, Noren, Silvera, and Gorman. Signatures range from "5" to "10," averaging "8/9." The number "15" is written in blue ink on a side panel. We have seen a number of Yankee balls from this era with numbers on them. That number corresponds to a player's uniform number and was put there by the club house attendant to indicate which player the ball belonged to. (Players were constantly beseeched by friends and acquaintances for team-signed balls, so this was an easy inventory system for the clubhouse workers.) Joe Collins wore number "15" for the Yankees in 1953, so this ball most likely originates from his personal collection. The ball displays very light age toning and the manufacturer's stampings are light, but legible. In Excellent to Mint condition overall. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Pre certified by Steve Grad and Brian Sobrero/Beckett Authentication. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+.
