This vintage red-and-black stitched ball features the signatures of fourteen prominent Hall of Famers, as well as a few additional star players. A total of nineteen signatures appear on the ball, including those of Babe Ruth (grading "3/4"), Ty Cobb, Cy Young, Honus Wagner (sweet spot), Rabbit Maranville (sweet spot), Johnny Evers, George Sisler, Connie Mack (on ball label), Ed Walsh, Bill McKechnie, Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Casey Stengel, Enos Slaughter, Bobby Shantz, Hank Gowdy, and Dick Sisler. The signatures, penned in either black fountain pen or green ink, range from "1" to "5," averaging "3." Given the fact that different inks were used and that the careers of these players spanned many decades, it seems almost certain that this ball was signed over a period of time, or at least at two separate events. Ruth, Cobb, and Wagner, of course, were three of the first five inductees to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936, and Young and Mack joined them the following year. Sisler was inducted in 1939, so this ball features six of the eleven inductees who were alive at the time of the dedication of the Hall of Fame in 1939. This is one of the most extraordinary Hall of Fame balls we have ever offered and one would be hard pressed to find another example featuring so many early Hall of Famers, not to mention the addition of later-day icons such as Mantle and Williams. The ball (which might be an official National League ball; the manufacturer's labels are barely legible) is darkly toned, with a number of light abrasions. In Good condition overall. Full LOA from Steve Grad and Brian Sobrero/Beckett Authentication and Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. (A PSA/DNA label, numbered "A89156," is affixed to the ball, but the corresponding LOA no longer accompanies the item.) Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
