Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig signed baseball dating from the historic 1927 season. The official American League (Johnson) ball has been signed in blue fountain pen by each player, with Ruth's signature occupying the sweet spot and Gehrig's appearing on the panel directly below. Ideally, the placement of the signatures allows for each to be seen together when the ball is properly displayed. Ruth's signature, which features quotation marks bracketing "Babe," is the slightly stronger of the two and grades "6" overall. Gehrig's signature grades "5." According to the Official American League Base Ball Guide
by Brandon Grunbaum, this ball dates exactly to the 1927 manufacturing period. 1927, of course, remains one of the most significant seasons in baseball history, precisely because of the exploits of Ruth and Gehrig. Not only did the pair wage one of the most memorable home-run duels in history, which culminated in Ruth setting his long-standing single-season record of 60 (Gehrig finished with 47), but they also formed the heart of the fabled "Murderers' Row" lineup on what is widely regarded as the greatest team in baseball history. A Ruth/Gehrig ball has always been the most desirable dual-signed ball in the hobby and this example, in which both signatures can be seen together, represents an outstanding example. The ball is moderately toned, with a few minor abrasions and tiny areas of discoloration, but all of the manufacturer's stampings remain bright and distinct. In Very Good condition overall. Full LOA from Steve Grad and Brian Sobrero/Beckett Authentication and auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000++.
