Signature example of Hall of Fame first baseman Lou Gehrig, beautifully scripted in black fountain pen (grading "8/9") upon an autograph-album page. Encapsulated by Beckett, with the signature certified as "Authentic." This is a very early Gehrig signature, the style of which dates it to the mid 1920s; however, it can most likely be dated specifically to the 1925 season based upon the fact that the reverse features the black fountain-pen signature ("8") of Wally Schang. Gehrig and Schang were teammates on the Yankees from 1923 to 1925, but Gehrig appeared in only thirteen games in 1923 and ten in 1924. It wasn't until 1925, Schang's last season with the Yankees, that Gehrig finally took over as the starting first baseman, so it stands to reason that both signatures were obtained during that year. The album page (6 x 4 inches) is lightly toned; otherwise it is in Excellent to Mint condition. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+.
