Bank check, dated March 26, 1919, signed by Honus Wagner. The check, made out to "Cash" in the amount of $210.00, is drawn on the Carnegie Trust Company of Carnegie, Pennsylvania, and is signed "John H. Wagner" along the base. Wagner's signature has been scripted in black fountain pen and grades "9." There is no endorsement on the reverse. Autograph collectors have always placed a special premium on checks due to their inherent authenticity. The offered Wagner check is an extremely early example and dates just two years after his retirement from baseball. Wagner checks are far rarer than Cobb or even Ruth checks, with just a small number discovered and released by the family in relatively recent years. The check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays light-to-moderate wear, including a bank stamp on the front, as well as a single spindle hole in the center (very unobtrusive; a common characteristic of a canceled bank check). In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Pre certified by Steve Grad and Brian Sobrero/Beckett Authentication.
Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
