Complete 792-card set of 1991 Topps Desert Shield baseball. Topps produced the 1991 Desert Shield set at the same time it produced its regular set in 1991 but with the special purpose of distributing the cards to members of the military stationed in the Middle East as part of Operation Desert Shield. The cards, differentiated from regular-issue cards by a gold foil stamp on the card front, caused quite a frenzy upon their release (reportedly limited to 6,500 sets) as cards were scattered across the world, but many did wind up in the hands of collectors. Their low print run compared to other sets of this era and their unique historical significance has made the set very popular with collectors to this day, and complete sets remain hard to find and extremely desirable. Condition is 75% Nr/Mt-Mt or better, 19% Nr/Mt, and 6% Ex to Ex-Mt (including a couple Vg-Ex). Keys: #1 Ryan (Nr/Mt), 79 Thomas (Nr/Mt-Mt+), 150 Ripken (Mint), 180 Gwynn (Mint), 333 Chipper Jones RC (70/30 L/R and T/B, otherwise Ex-Mt+), 540 Brett (Mint), 570 Bonds (Nr/Mt-Mt), and 790 Griffey Jr. (Nr/Mt+). Outstanding opportunity to acquire this sought-after modern set in extremely high-grade. Total: 792 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
