Rare three-card advertising panel for the 1964 Topps series featuring cards #20 Friend, 84 Willey, and 107 White Sox Rookies, on the front and #50 Mantle back on reverse, along with illustrations of a 1964 Topps wax display box and four 1964 Topps insert coins. For many years (beginning in 1952 and continuing well into the 1960s), these rare three-card advertising panels were distributed by Topps only to grocery and candy-store owners for the purpose of announcing and providing samples of the new cards being offered. The fronts are uncut strips of three cards. The reverse of the advertising panel cards, however, are very different from those of the issued cards. The backs present advertising for the set directed to merchants, and the backs also often feature a single sample of a card reverse, which is usually that of a star such as Mickey Mantle as in this case (and not necessarily the back of one of the three players pictured on the front of the advertising panel). Because of their method of issue and purpose, all Topps advertising panels are rare. Light corner wear, otherwise overall Excellent condition. This is an exceptional Topps advertising panel that would be at home in any salesman-sample panel collection or would serve as an ideal companion piece to any 1964 Topps collection. Dimensions: 7.5 x 3.5 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
