Extremely rare Toleteros In Action complete set of 178 cards features full colorized in-action game scenes from the Puerto Rican Winter League, highlighted by four different cards featuring legendary Hall of Famer Willard Brown. Each card has been professionally graded and encapsulated by SGC. This is a fascinating set with very interesting photography which is unique to this issue, featuring many Negro League stars, Major Leaguers, and players who appear in few other sets. The key to the set is Brown. The stock is very high quality. The cards are numbered, blank-backed, and feature captions in Spanish. This is only the third complete set of this issue that we have ever offered. The first set, offered as lot #558 in REA's 2004 auction, realized $4,887.50, and the second set offered as lot 502 in REA’s 2013 auction, realized $5,332.50. Both of those sets were not entirely graded as offered here. The grading fee alone for 178 cards is over $1,000. The set presented in this lot is only the fifth complete set ever offered at public auction (to the best of our knowledge). All the cards are bright and crisp with brilliant colors, and many of the lesser graded cards have been downgraded due to minor technical flaws such as album residue or a small area of paper loss on the reverse. SGC grading composite: EX/NM 80 (4 cards): #14, 22, 62, and 142. EX+ 70 (2 cards): #76 and 86. EX 60 (12 cards): #28, 32 (W. Brown), 34, 41, 63, 65, 66, 85, 93 (W. Brown), 109, 112, and 148. VG/EX+ 55 (1 card): #119. VG/EX 50 (14 cards): #18, 42, 43, 47, 58, 59, 71, 90, 95, 102, 105, 133, 176 (W. Brown), and 178. VG 40 (31 cards): #5, 12, 24, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35, 40, 46, 52, 55, 57, 67, 70, 72 (W. Brown), 75, 81, 82, 88, 89, 96, 98, 125, 128, 130, 141, 155, 159, 161, and 168. VG+ 35 (1 card): #87. GOOD 30 (49 cards): #4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 15, 21, 39, 45, 48, 49, 50, 51, 56, 60, 64, 68, 69, 73, 74, 77, 78, 79, 83, 84, 92, 97, 99, 104, 115, 117, 118, 121, 122, 127, 134, 135, 136, 146, 147, 149, 156, 158, 160, 162, 165, 171, and 180. FAIR 20 (28 cards): #2, 3, 9, 13, 17, 44, 53, 91, 94, 100, 101, 103, 108, 114, 116, 120, 123, 124, 131, 132, 145, 152, 154, 157, 166, 167, 172, and 175. POOR 10 (33 cards): #1, 16, 25, 26, 37, 38, 54, 61, 80, 106, 107, 110, 111, 113, 126, 129, 137, 138, 139, 140, 143, 144, 150, 151, 153, 163, 164, 169, 170, 173, 174, 177, and 179. Authentic (3 cards): #23, 30, and 36. The set is numbered 1 through 180, and no card numbers 19 and 20 were issued, making the set complete at 178 cards. This has been verified by the discovery of the album which was issued to house the set. The first eighteen cards are vertically oriented while the remainder of the set switches to a horizontal orientation. The design change has been speculated as the reason for omitting cards #19 and 20 as the layout of the album was not conducive to holding all twenty vertical cards. Many cards feature two or more players in on-the-field shots, and many players appear in the set more than once. Willard Brown, for example, appears on four different cards (#'s 32, 72, 93, and 176). Some of the many other Major League and Negro League stars who appear in the set are Vic Power, Canena Marquez, Luis Arroyo, Bob Thurman, George Scales (on two cards), Howard Easterling, Willard Brown, Luke Easter (on three cards), Buster Clarkson, Wilmer Fields, Francisco Coimere, Tetelo Vargas, Piper Davis, Pee Wee Butts, Alonzo Perry, Artie Wilson, and Quiny Trouppe. This is a very significant set because of the inclusion of so many players who appear in few or no other card sets. This is an exceptionally attractive complete set of this rarely offered and significant Puerto Rican issue featuring numerous highlights that would be a significant addition to even the most advanced collection. Total: 178 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate (open).
