Original cabinet photo of Boston Red Sox catcher Tom Needham, taken by noted Boston photographer Carl Horner, which was later used in the production of Needham's 1911 M116 Sporting Life
card. Needham played with Boston only from 1904 to 1907, so this cabinet obviously dates to that narrow four-year span. Horner's credit stamp appears along the base of the mount. Since Needham was a member of the Chicago Cubs at the time his M116 Sporting Life
card was issued, the "Boston" team designation was artistically removed from his jersey so that this image could be used. Carl Horner was one of the preeminent baseball photographers of his era and because Boston was home to both an American and National League franchise, he was able to capture nearly every major league player at one time or another during the early 1900s. This is the first example of this Needham cabinet we have ever seen and one that would be a perfect compliment to any advanced M116 collection. The cabinet (5.25 x 7.25 inches) displays moderate handling wear and has been graded 50 VG/EX by SGC. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
