Collection of forty-five different 1939 Play Ball gum cards, highlighted by four Hall of Famers, and all graded and encapsulated by PSA. The first of three major baseball-card sets by Gum, Inc., this landmark set is known for its inclusion of Ted Williams’ rookie card as well as cards of all of the other major stars and Hall of Famers of the era. Eight of the cards in this collection are from the rare high-number series (#116-162). PSA condition composite: NM 7 (6 cards): #11, 18, 46, 51 Ott (HOF), 57, and 109. EX-MT+ 6.5 (1 card): #72. EX-MT 6 (9 cards): #3 Ruffing (HOF), 17, 43, 50 Gehringer (HOF), 74, 86, 93, 95, and 148. EX+ 5.5 (1 card): #35. EX 5 (5 cards): #34, 52, 71, 109, and 138. VG-EX+ 4.5 (6 cards): #18, 23, 57, 73, 80, and 108. VG-EX 4 (15 cards): #2, 5, 8, 18, 28, 46, 85, 103 Berg, 104, 112 P. Waner (HOF), 120, 128, 129, 135, and 142. VG 3 (1 card): #104. GOOD+ 2.5 (1 card): #157. This is a small but desirable collection of cards, which could serve as an outstanding foundation for a mid-grade complete set of this classic prewar gum issue. The total SMR value in the assigned grades is $1,352 (factoring the half-grades at the lower whole-grade level). Total: 45 cards.
