Presented is an outstanding near-complete set of W462 Salutation Exhibits consisting of eighty out of the eighty-three cards in the set as checklisted in The Standard Catalog.
This near-set is highlighted by all of the rarities within the set, including the Ted Williams (#9 on back) variation. These unnumbered cards are not dated and were issued over a series of years, so they are generally collected as a single set. Some cards in this Exhibit-card series were issued for numerous years, while other players were issued for only a short period of time, thus creating many rarities. Because they have the player's signature and a "salutation" scripted at the bottom, they are often referred to as "Salutation Exhibits." The rarities in this set make the assembly of a complete set one of the most difficult of all Exhibit-card sets. The three missing cards are Heath/large projection, McQuinn/Made in USA left corner and Pollet/Made in USA left corner. The cards in this collection are extremely bright, fresh, and attractive. Condition is 44% Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt, 31% Vg-Ex to Ex, 14% Gd to Vg, and 11% lesser (including one with a slight trim). Keys:
Averill (two tack holes, otherwise Vg-Ex), Dean (Vg+), DiMaggio (Ex-Mt), Feller/port. (Ex), Feller/pitching (Nr/Mt), Foxx (Nr/Mt), Gehrig (Pr-Fr due to paper loss on reverse), Gehringer (Ex-Mt), Gomez (tiny abrasion on surface, otherwise Nr/Mt+), Greenberg/Very truly yours (Ex-Mt), Hartnett (Fr-Gd), Holmes/Sincerely yours (Vg-Ex), Klein (Vg), Kreevich (Ex), Lombardi/Cordially (writing on reverse, otherwise Vg+), Mulcahy (Nr/Mt), Newson (Ex), Rizzo (Vg), Williams/#9 shows (pencil mark on back, otherwise Vg), and Williams/#9 not showing (Ex). This is a very attractive, overall high-grade, rarely seen near-set of this classic Exhibit Supply Company issue. Total: 80 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+.
