Very attractive complete low-number run of 1934-1936 R318 Batter-Up. The R318 Batter-Up set is universally recognized as one of the most significant of all prewar baseball-card issues. Their striking colors, unusual standup design, and rarity compared to other 1930s sets make "Batter-Ups" one of the most fascinating, distinctive, and difficult-to-complete of all sets from the 1930s. These cards are designed with die-cut backgrounds that can be punched out and folded back to allow each card to stand up. Because of this design, many R318s are naturally found in damaged condition, and in many cases are found with the die-cut backgrounds entirely lost. All of the card backgrounds in this collection (except #28) are complete and intact. Condition: 26% Vg-Ex (including three Ex), 39% Vg, and 35% lesser. Seventeen cards are graded and encapsulated by PSA (12) and SGC (5). All five SGC graded cards are pedigreed from the Lionel Carter Collection. Keys: #1 Berger (Gd), 3 Lopez (Fr), 5 Hubbell (tape residue on back, otherwise Ex), 6 Terry (Vg), 8 Bottomley (Vg), 10 Ferrell (Gd+), 14 Traynor (tape on back, otherwise Vg), 16 Hafey (PSA VG-EX 4), 17 Waner (VG 3), 21 Vaughn (Pr), 23 Gomez (Vg), 24 Averill (Vg-Ex), 25 Cochrane (VG 3), 27 Ott (Vg), 28 Foxx (die-cut background taped on and writing on back), 30 Dickey (Vg-Ex), 31 Grove (Vg+), 32 Cronin (SGC VG 40), 33 Frisch (tape and pencil writing on reverse, otherwise Gd), 34 Simmons (VG-EX 4), 35 Hornsby (Gd), 36 Lyons (Vg+), 37 Maranville (Gd+), 42 Gehringer (tape covering reverse), 45 Lazzeri (Fr-Gd), 57 Greenberg (Vg), 64 Dean (Fr), 73 Wilson (Vg-Ex), and 77 Manush (Vg+). Additional graded cards: EX 5 (2 cards): #7 Martin (SGC EX 60) and 18. VG-EX 4 (7 cards): #12 (SGC VG/EX 50), 22, 38, 55, 74, 75, and 79. VG 3 (2 cards): #15 (SGC VG 40) and 26. SGC POOR 10 (1 card): #78. Accompanied by a Fair condition wrapper from the low-number series (common style with an image of a catcher set against a red and green background), displaying more than normal packaging wrinkles and folds, and a few small tears along the fold lines. This is a very attractive complete low-number run of this unusual and very substantial 1930s prewar issue, which is highlighted by twenty-eight Hall of Famers. Total: 81 items (80 cards and one wrapper). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
