Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Rare Newsboy cabinet card of Hall of Famer John Ward (#587). Newsboy cabinet cards were issued by the National Tobacco Works of New York City to promote their Newsboy Tobacco brand. Newsboys are extremely rare and one of the very few baseball-card sets issued during the 1890s. There are only fourteen different baseball players currently known in the Newsboy set and most are members of the 1894 New York Giants championship team. John Ward is one of only two Hall of Fame players included in the set (the other is Amos Rusie); however, he is featured on two separate cards, each displaying a different pose. The offered example is the “bat at side” pose. This is one of John Ward's most majestic and striking cards. Ward is recognized as one of the most important and influential players of the nineteenth century. In addition to being a star pitcher, and later a standout shortstop for the N.Y. Giants during the 1880s, he was also one of Major League Baseball's few true scholars. Ward was a college graduate (Penn State), and he later earned a law degree from Columbia. In 1890, Ward served as the leader of the short-lived renegade Players League. This is a very attractive example from this substantial and rare nineteenth-century tobacco cabinet-card series, with minor faults in the form of a little general wear and a couple insignificant corner creases to the mount allowing a technical grade of Vg-Ex, but clearly with a very pleasing Excellent appearance. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+.
