Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. N300 Mayo's Cut Plug of Hall of Famer Cap Anson dating from his playing days as first baseman and manager of the Chicago Colts (later Cubs). There are very few cards of Anson as a player. The Mayo's Cut Plug is one of the very few. This is a very attractive example, particularly impressive (far nicer than most other Mayo's we have seen graded VG/EX), with a bold portrait, no creases, and virtually no edge and corner wear (as is almost always the case with Mayo's due to their condition-sensitive black-border design). The front and back are extremely clean. Two tiny wrinkles, one in each of the top left and bottom right corners, account for the assigned grade despite an overall Excellent appearance. A premier batsman and leader, Anson is widely regarded as the foremost on-field baseball figure of the nineteenth century. He led the NL in hitting three times and was the first man to get 3,000 hits. As a manager, he took his Chicago team to five pennants. Mayo's Cut Plug is the premier baseball-card set from the 1890s. This is an impressive example of one of Cap Anson's most classic cards from this extremely important and popular nineteenth-century series. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+.
