This is a very attractive example of one of Ruth's truly great early 1920s cards. 1921 was the very first year the legendary Exhibit Supply Company of Chicago issued cards. It would go on to issue sets for the next fifty years. These cards were sold by Exhibit card machines at amusement parks and penny arcades, one penny per card. This is the key card from the set and one of Ruth's earliest cards featuring him with the Yankees. Graded Authentic by PSA, we are not sure why this example did not qualify for a numerical grade, as it does not appear to be trimmed, undersized, or altered in any way. The front of the card displays as VG+, with light wrinkling, moderate wear on the corners, and a flawless image. The reverse of the card displays extensive biographical and statistical information carefully written in pen, presumably by a passionate early collector. Interestingly, a partially torn Ruth sticker from the 1921-1930 Major League Ball Die-Cuts set is also adhered to the back. An extremely appealing example of what is universally recognized by collectors as one of Ruth’s most classic cards. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
