Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. This is the ONLY example graded at this level with none higher and one of only two known to exist (in any grade)! Presented is an incredible T5 Pinkerton cabinet of legendary New York Giants Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson. This is a magnificent example of one of the rarest of all Mathewson cards. To date, SGC has only encapsulated four examples of #251 Christy Mathewson (in any grade)! T5 Pinkerton cabinets are among the rarest of all 1910-era tobacco issues. These cabinet cards were available only by mail in exchange for coupons packaged with cigarettes produced by the Pinkerton Tobacco Co. Each T5 premium card is designed with a real photo (3-3/8 x 5-1/2 inches) affixed to a thick cardboard cabinet-style mount (4-3/4 x 7-3/4 inches). This outstanding example of Christy Mathewson shows him in an ideal pitching pose. It is bright, fresh, and clean, with a stunningly crisp photograph. The cabinet presents as Excellent or better overall and has been downgraded due to light discoloration in the bottom right corner, which shows on front and back. The reverse is otherwise perfectly clean. T5 Pinkertons are found with two different mount styles: a thick cabinet-card mount with a surrounding embossed decorative imprint and a thin paper mount. The offered example is on the more desirable, higher-quality thick mount. This is an exceptionally attractive example of one of the best of all Christy Mathewson cards, and would be a significant addition to any serious Hall of Fame or prewar-card collection. Reserve $5,000. Estimate (open).
