Presented is a 1914 T222 Fatima rookie card of legendary Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander in a pitching pose. This is widely recognized as Alexander's most desirable card and it is very rarely offered. Issued in 1914 by the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company, the individual-player Fatima cards are among the most distinctive of all tobacco cards and are much rarer than the T200 Fatima team cards. The thin photographic stock and fragile glossy surface of these unusual real-photo-style cards make them especially susceptible to minor surface creases. This example of Alexander’s rookie card is bright and clean, with outstanding contrast, a few light creases, and centering to the right. A couple spots of damage to the edges and missing right-side corners account for the strict technical grade of PR 1 by PSA. The reverse is clean with a boldly printed advertisement. This is a very presentable, modestly graded example of the most significant of all Grover Cleveland Alexander cards, his rookie card, which is especially important as it is one of the two key cards (along with Walter Johnson) from the exceptionally high quality T222 set that dates from the early teens. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
