Exceptionally rare 1889 N173 Dogs Head cabinet card featuring Charlie Bennett (#27-1 pose) of the Boston Beaneaters. This is a stunning card! All N173 Old Judges are rare, but examples with Dogs Head advertising are particularly rare, and extremely desirable among serious pre-1900 and sample-card collectors. In fact, this is only the sixth Dogs Head cabinet (of any player) we have offered during the past twenty years! This card features a striking photo of Bennett batting. This is also a particularly fascinating card as it was obviously issued very shortly after Bennett finished the 1888 season with Detroit. Apparently, no photographs of Bennett in a Boston uniform were yet available when this card was produced in 1889, so Goodwin used a photo of Bennett in his Detroit uniform even though he is identified with Boston near the base of the photograph. This is easily seen upon close examination, giving this fascinating card an added dimension of interest and appeal. This is an outstanding card! Do not be fooled by the modest SGC-assigned grade of POOR 10 (submitted by REA)! The card is downgraded due to evidence of album removal on the blank reverse. This type of flaw practically "comes with the territory" for most N173 Old Judge cabinets, and advanced collectors concern themselves more with the image quality when assessing the desirability of a given card. The photo contrast is strong, with great detail visible in the image, right down to the laces on Bennett's shoes. The mount is perfectly clean, with virtually no wear at the corners and a well-centered image. An extremely rare and striking sample card from this legendary nineteenth-century cabinet-card series. From the Dan Gantt Collection. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
