Graded VG 40 by SGC. Superb example of Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson from a rare and unusual 1910-era candy-card set. Designated in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards and by professional grading companies as "1910 E-UNC Candy," very little is known about the origin of these cards. Examples with a diamond design surrounding the card are known to exist, suggesting that these cards were likely part of a larger box and intended to be cut out by hand. The image of Mathewson used on this card is the exact same one as featured on his E98 caramel cards. The offered example is neatly cut on all four sides and boasts a brilliant blue design, a crisp image, strong corners, and a flawless surface. The back is blank. The card displays as Ex-Mt. An indistinct discoloration on the back presumably must have been interpreted as a mark by SGC. While the exact origin of this card is unknown, it remains a desirable and extremely attractive card issued during Mathewson’s legendary career. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
