Graded EX 60 by SGC (submitted by REA). One of only two examples graded at this level with none higher! Extremely attractive high-grade example of Thomas Leach (Pittsburgh Pirates) from this very rare and classic 1910-era candy set. The E103 Williams Caramel set is easily distinguished from other caramel sets of the era by the bright red background highlighting each player's portrait. As noted on each card along the lower margin, the Williams Candy Company was located in Oxford, Pennsylvania, and this candy was very likely issued on a somewhat regional basis. This fact almost certainly accounts for their great rarity. When they are found, they usually have serious condition problems, which is not surprising considering that these cards were issued to children, one card per package of candy. A grade of EX may not sound impressive, but it is extraordinary for an E103! Only six cards (of any subject) have ever been graded higher by SGC out of 458 cards evaluated to date (two EX+ 70, two EX/MT 80, one EX/MT+ 82, and one NM 84). The offered example is crisp and clean, with a flawless image, deep red background, even wear on the corners, and outstanding centering. A light stain is evident to the left of Leach's face. The blank reverse is entirely clean. This is a stunning high-grade example worthy of any complete E103 set or sample-card collection. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
