Rare stereoview card of Sitting Bull. The bust-length image captures the legendary Sioux medicine man gazing pensively to the right of the camera. This image was most likely taken during Sitting Bull’s captivity after he surrendered at Fort Buford in 1881. The lettering along the left border reads “Photographic Gems of the Great Northwest.” The photographer’s credit appears along the right border: “Photographed and Published by S. J. Morrow, Yankton, D. T.” This is the first example of this stereoview we have ever offered and we cannot recall having seen another. The card (7 x 4 inches) displays a small abrasion along the top border of the right photo, as well as light surface wear. The name “Sitting Bull” is written in pencil on the reverse, as is a former sale price. In Excellent condition overall. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+.
