Naval commission, dated January 7, 1875, signed by Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885), eighteenth President of the United States. The document appoints Whitmul P. Ray as a "Master in the Navy." Signed by "U. S. Grant" as President of the United States and George Robeson as secretary of the navy. Grant's signature has been scripted in black ink, grading "8/9." The blue seal of the United States Navy appears along the base. This particular document (15.75 x 19.5 inches) is a true condition rarity and may be the finest such Presidential commission we have ever offered. Aside from the normal fold lines (as issued) the document remains in Near Mint condition, appearing much as it did when first issued. Perfect for display. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000++.
