Superb high-grade complete twelve-card set of 1931 W. A. & A. C. Churchman "Prominent Golfers" large-variety cards, highlighted by Hall of Famer Bobby Jones. Each card features a caricature of a professional golfer with a detailed background, and the golfer's name along the bottom. Inscribed as "A Series of 12" on the reverse, this large-card variety of "Prominent Golfers" is extremely rare and compliments its smaller-format 50-card version of the same year. Most advanced collectors would agree that this larger-card variety is about 25 times as rare as the scarce smaller version. Each card has been graded and encapsulated by PSA, and the complete set currently ranks eleventh on the PSA Set Registry with a 7.02 overall GPA. The PSA grades are as follows: One NM-MT 8:
#4 Hagen. One NM+ 7.5:
#3 Cotton. Seven NM 7:
#1, 5 Jones, 6, 7, 9 Vardon, 10, and 12. Three EX-MT 6:
#2, 8, and 11. Compared to vintage baseball cards, golf cards are beginning to be recognized as offering an outstanding value. This is an extraordinary high-grade complete set of one of the premier golf sets of the era. The SMR value in the assigned grades is $2,575. Total: 12 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++.
