Presented is an exceptional complete original wax box of 1964 Philadelphia Football. The box contains twenty-four wax packs with each pack containing five cards, for a total of 120 cards. The 1964 Philadelphia set features all the stars of the day highlighted by thirty-four Hall of Famers, including Jim Brown, Bart Starr, and Johnny Unitas, as well as the Hall of Fame rookie cards of Merlin Olsen, Herb Adderley, Willie Davis, Mick Tingelhoff, and John Mackey. This is a very rare box! It was recently discovered by our consignor along with two other boxes still housed in a portion of the original (and very brittle) cellophane, exactly as issued in 1964. The cellophane was removed to allow for careful examination of the enclosed packs by Steve Hart at Baseball Card Exchange, the foremost expert on unopened material. Two of the boxes were shrink-wrapped as part of BBCE's authentication process, including one which appeared in REA's Spring 2016 auction (realizing $16,800). The offered box is not shrink-wrapped by BBCE because the seals on four of the twenty-four packs have loosened, which technically means the entire box is not unopened. BBCE has assured us (as we expected) that all the packs are legitimate. Interestingly, we were able to see some of the cards within the four opened packs, one of which is a beautiful Jim Brown, one of the key cards to the set. The twenty unopened packs are all Ex to Nr/Mt. While it is impossible to provide guarantees with reference to grading of unopened material, there is, of course, the very real possibility that within this box are cards in extremely high grade. This is only the second complete box we have ever seen offered at public auction in more than twenty years (the first of which was offered in our spring 2016 sale). The display box is bright and clean, with moderate toning along the edges of the top panel and a small tear in the front side panel as well as light age spotting and a small area of paper loss on the bottom panel. This is a tremendous original wax box of this popular football set that would be a worthy addition to even the most advanced football or unopened material collection. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+.
