The 1886 "Spotted Tie" series, featuring sixteen players from the New York Mets of the American Association, is one of the rarest, most desirable subsets of the N172 Old Judge set, and these cards are also among the earliest issued of all N172 Old Judges. Each player from this extremely popular Old Judge subset is featured in a portrait pose with his distinctive "spotted tie." Presented is a collection of four of the sixteen rare N172 "Spotted Ties." This lot consists of the following: Elmer Foster, Frank Hankinson, William Holbert, and Charles Reipschlager. Each card presents with superb photo clarity. They would, however, grade modestly as the Goodwin & Co. advertisement at the bottom is neatly cut off on each, and three of the four (all but Foster) show additional trimming on other edges. The "Spotted Ties" have always been appreciated for their rarity and as a popular subset to the N172 series. All of these cards are rare. Even a sample is a significant N172 rarity. This is a relatively affordable collection of four cards from this extremely significant N172 Old Judge subset. Total: 4 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
