Graded EX+ 70 by SGC. This is the ONLY example graded at this level with just one higher! Incredibly rare tobacco card featuring George Mullin of the Detroit Tigers issued in 1909 by Cabanas brand cigarettes in Cuba. This set was issued in conjunction with a postseason visit to Cuba by the A. L. Champion Detroit Tigers. Also issued were cards of players from the Almendares B.B.C. and the Habana B.B.C. The offered example is bright, crisp, and perfectly clean, both front and back, with four strong corners, and centering slightly to the top left. The reverse of the card is perfectly clean with bold blue printing that is centered to the right. The back of the card has advertising in Spanish, which translated reads "The best way to form a valuable collection of baseball cards of the Cuban and foreign players is to smoke Cabanas." The subset of twelve Detroit Tigers is one of the rarest of all baseball-card issues of any type from any era. In fact, during the past ten years, we have only offered four examples from this rare issue!. When the Tigers traveled to Cuba for this early series of exhibition games, they did so without Cobb and Crawford, which is why those two stars are not included in the set, and also probably why the Tigers lost eight of the twelve games they played. This extremely attractive example would make an outstanding addition to any sample or Cuban-card collection. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
